The Great Falls Fire and Rescue Station, built in 1960, is the oldest emergency facility in the county. A larger facility is needed to meet current operational requirements, including larger bays for equipment. The $12 million bond will pay to construct a 15,500 square foot facility.
The Fire and Rescue Academy requires expanded facilities to train the more than 1,300 uniformed personnel assigned. The number of emergency personnel has increased 69 per cent since the Academy was last expanded 23 years ago. The requirement and demand for training, interoperability training, and additional mandatory certification continues to increase. The expansion will cost $17.1 million.
The Fire and Rescue Department's facilities are part of two county bond referendums on the November 7 general election ballot. The public safety bonds will ask voters to allow the county to borrow $125 million for construction at public safety facilities and $25 million for parks.
