This document defines visual inspections and tests and explains how visual inspections are scheduled.
WHAT IS A VISUAL INSPECTION?
HOW ARE VISUAL TIME SLOTS SCHEDULED?
WHAT IS A FULL TIME SLOT OR TEST SLOT?
HOW ARE FULL TIME SLOT TESTS SCHEDULED?
A visual inspection is an inspection or
test that requires one inspector and usually takes no more than 15
to 20 minutes. A visual inspection may consist of a small
punch list or a minor system modification that can be inspected within
a 15 to 20 minute time period. An example of a visual inspection is the testing of indicating
devices such as strobes or horns for a new tenant build-out.
A visual inspection may include one (1) activation
device, such as a pull station, a smoke detector, a duct detector,
etc. Other examples of a visual inspection are: main drain
test, sprinkler flow, tamper tie-in to the fire alarm system,
a visual of the tie-in of a 13D system to the domestic water
supply, etc.
When you call to reserve a visual inspection time slot, only the date
and not the time of the test will be scheduled. On the preceding
workday, you will be contacted by Fire Protection Systems
and given the time for the visual with a 2-hour test
window. Your representative must remain on the job site for the entire 2 hour test window.
Each day is divided into three time slots consisting of two
hours. These time slots are as follows:
- 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
- 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
- 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
The full time slots are scheduled according to the type of test requested. One suppression system hydrostatic or a small fire alarm system test can be performed in a two hour slot. (Note: More complex systems may require multiple slots.) A new shell high-rise building fire alarm system may require as many as 8 to 10 days (24-30 time slots) to test. Whereas, a strip warehouse building may only take one time slot.
The following is a partial list of tests requiring a minimum of a 2-hour time slot.*
- Any hydrostatic test (except 13D systems)
- Clean agent suppression system tests
- Fire alarm testing
- Electronic door locks (multiple locking devices)
- Trip tests (multiple systems)
*There are too many combinations of the above to list them all separately.
The following is a partial list of visual inspections that may be performed in a visual slot.
- Underground Fireline Visual
- Pump Setting Visual
- 13D Systems Hydrostatic
- Electronic Door Locks (One Locking Device Only)
- Standpipe or Underground Fireline Flush
- Trip Test (One System)
- Fire Alarm (Indicating Devices Only)
- Central Station Test
- Main Drain Test
