Neighborhood A user defined geographic area around a point of interest.
Fairfax county agencies and individuals define neighborhoods differently.
Neighborhoods are meant to imply Civic Association, Homeowner Association, or
Community Association boundaries. There is not a geographic layer that defines
these boundaries.
Views Views are logical groups of information. Currently there are 4
views to choose from: General Information, Parks, Demographics, and Police Incidents. Each view
has unique search functions and map types associated with it.
Map Types Each map type has specific layers of information associated
with it. As you increase the zoom level, more information relevant to the map
type becomes visible.
Search Area The search area allows you to find features based on a number
of criteria. Each view has a unique set of searches appropriate for information
displayed. In the general information view there are three search options:
Address, Street Intersection, and parcel ID number.
Overview Map The overview map shows the location of the main map.The red
and grey crosshairs show the location.
Map Legend The Map Legend is used to identify symbols on the main
map.Every effort has been made to make sure map contents meet ADA requirements.
If you have trouble interpreting any of the maps, please contact
gishelpq@fairfaxcounty.gov.
Zoom Bar: Use the zoom bar to zoom level of the main map. The + icon will
increase the zoom level one bar.The - icon will decrease the zoom level of the
main map. You can click on any bar to jump to a specific zoom level. As you
increase the zoom level, more layers of information will be drawn in the map
area.
Pan Bars: Click on any of the cardinal directions (North, South, East,
West, NE, NW, SE, SW) listed on the side of the map to move (or pan) the map in
that direction.
There are several search options and map types associated with each view. Each
is detailed in the appropriate section below.

This map is best used in conjunction with the "My Neighborhood" report. It
shows roads, building footprints, parcels, parks, public facility locations,
schools, supervisor district boundaries, jurisdiction boundaries, and water
features.
Topographic:This map shows contour and elevation information. The
contours represent 5 foot elevation changes in altitude. All spot elevations
listed are in feet. The elevation data was derived 1997 from digital
orthophotography. For detailed MetaData on the contour data visit the page:
http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/maps/nofind/metadata/contours.htm
Property: The property map includes all of the layers that make up the
standard Fairfax County tax map. This is an ideal map to use in conjunction
with a PIN search.

photography provided by the Commonwealth of Virginia. If development has
occurred since that time it will NOT be shown on the photos. The resolution
(pixel size) of the photography shown is 2ft.

HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?
Fairfax County Police Station Service Areas, or Police
Districts, are defined by the specific district stations that respond
to calls within specific boundaries. Fairfax County Supervisor Districts are
the areas served by the elected members of the
Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. There are nine Supervisor Districts and
eight Police Districts. The two can easily be confused because several share
the same names even though their boundaries are different.
This map highlights the differences between Police Districts and
Supervisor Districts. Police Districts are the bright boundaries,
superimposed over a background composed of Supervisor Districts in
blue/blue-black. Notice how the area and boundaries of the Mason,
Mount Vernon and Sully Police Districts differ from the Supervisor
Districts with the same names.

|
The Police Incident information displayed on these pages is originally entered
in the County's computer aided dispatch system and then processed into format
that allows the information to be shown on a map. This process is called
geocoding. Generally incident information
is available for viewing with 48 hours of the time an incident is reported.
|
| |
|
The map points that show police incidents are added to the map through a
process called geocoding. Geocoding is the process of converting an address
to a map coordinate - the address value is taken as a representative fraction
for the address range of the given street, based on its length. It is an
approximation (not exact) and is meant to be used as a reference. In the
example below, 375 Main street is geocoded as 3/4th of the distance from the
starting point of the 300 block to the ending point of the 300 block. Because
of this process you can not conclude that the police incident shown on the map
occurred at the property adjacent to the point shown, but you can conclude that
the incident occurred close to the location shown.

The geographic information contained on this site is NOT to be
construed or used as a "legal description." Every effort has been made to
ensure the highest accuracy of all spatial and attribute data, but
transcription errors or errors in the source documents can occur. Fairfax
County assumes no liability for either any errors, omissions, or inaccuracies
in the information provided regardless of their cause, or for any decision
made, action taken, or action not taken by the user in reliance upon any maps
or information provided. The property lines on the parcel layer have a
positional accuracy of 8 to 10 ft. The planimetric features (building outlines,
etc.) have a positional accuracy of 2 to 3 ft. Therefore, the imagery and
parcels may not have exact alignment. Precise determination of parcel
boundaries must be made by a licensed surveyor using the location information
recorded on the property deed on file with the Circuit Court. The orthoimagery
was taken in 2002. If development has occurred since that time, it will not be
shown in the imagery.
