Digital Map Viewer Plug-in Requirements

Important Note: If you are having difficulty accessing the map page, delete all the temporary internet files (clear your cache) from your browser and try again.

You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to view these maps. Please note that the use of Acrobat Reader version 5.0.1 can cause errors with reading PDF some files. Should you be running version 5.0.1 download an update to the plug-in.
How to find out what version you are running.

  1. Open Acrobat Reader
  2. Under the help menu select "About Adobe Acrobat"
  3. The full version number will be displayed in the splash screen

Property Maps

Property Sample map

Property maps include:
Boundaries: State, County or Corporate, Subdivision, Block Division, Property
Legal Rights of Way: State or Interstate Highway, Railroad, Public Street, Private Street, Outlet Road, Unconstructed Right-of-way, Parking or Pavement limits
Easements: Approved Flood Plain, Recorded Flood Plain, Storm Drainage, Conservation, Ingress-Egress, Major Public Utility

Currently all property information is captured and maintained digitally. Property maps are updated daily and published in book format yearly. The Property Map book is available for sale at the Fairfax County Publications Center. In addition, all 444 grid sections have been compiled on a CD-ROM in PDF format. The Property Maps CD is available for sale at the GIS front counter. Individual multicolored tax maps can be purchased at a scale of 1" = 500' or 1"=200'. Individual tax maps are printed by request only. See price list for details. Our reference collection of property books dates back to 1961. Current and historic property maps can be viewed at the GIS front counter.

Source materials for property maps include site plans, deed descriptions, subdivision plats, and acreage plats. A plat is a detailed drawing taken from the survey of a property boundary. A few of the many features included on a plat are: Bearings and Distances of lot lines, Utility Easements, Area, and Curve Data. The collection is comprised of paper plats which vary in size, scale, number of pages, and condition. Plats can be viewed at the GIS front counter. Photocopies of plats can be purchased. Zoning Maps

All land in Fairfax County is zoned into residential, commercial or industrial districts. The permitted density in each zoning district and the uses allowed in each district are described in detail in the County Zoning Ordinance. The location and boundaries of the zoning districts established by this Ordinance are illustrated on official zoning maps. These maps illustrate all of the property map information as well as the zoning districts.

Topographic Maps

A topographic map illustrates ground surface elevation, as well as, natural and human-made features on the ground surface. This information was derived from 1997 photography. The contour interval is 5 feet. These topographic maps do not show property map information. The 1997 topographic map data is not published in book format, however, all 444 grid sections have been compiled on a CD-ROM in PDF format. The Topographic Maps CD is available for sale at the GIS front counter. In addition, individual multicolored topographic maps can be purchased at a scale of 1" = 500' or 1" = 200'. Contour Maps

Contour Sample map

A contour map illustrates ground surface elevation with lines that join points of equal elevation. These maps illustrate all of the property map information as well as contour lines. The contour interval is 5 feet. The date of the photography used to determine the ground elevation is 1997. The 1997 contour map data is not published in book format, however, all 444 grid sections have been compiled on a CD-ROM in PDF format. The Contour Maps w/Property CD is available for sale at the GIS front counter. In addition, individual multicolored contour maps can be purchased at a scale of 1" = 500' or 1" = 200'.
