The Federal Transit Administration's approval of the Dulles Rail Project on June 10, 2004 accomplished a significant milestone, allowing the project to progress into preliminary engineering. Along with this important advancement arises the need to plan for the redevelopment of the Wiehle Avenue Transit Station site, which will be through the framework of a public/private partnership.
Supervisor Hudgins has appointed the Wiehle Avenue Steering Committee, which will be the driving force in creating an efficient Request For Proposal (RFP) to solicit transit-oriented joint development proposals for co-development of the nine acre County-owned parcel adjacent to the station. Using the conclusions from the Reston Charrette as a starting point, the committee will begin establishing the process, scope and criteria for the RFP. Special meetings will be held for the community, property owners, and developers to discuss the RFP process, status, and developments to ensure all concerns and issues are identified and addressed accordingly.
The Steering Committee will meet throughout the summer and fall of 2004. Meetings are held at the North County Governmental Center, 12000 Bowman Towne Dr., Reston, adjacent to the Hunter Mill District office. For more information contact Goldie Harrison at 703-478-0283.
Community Meeting on Development Principles
On Tuesday, Oct. 12, Supervisor Catherine Hudgins and the Wiehle Avenue Steering Committee will be hosting a community meeting to review principles developed by the committee and to solicit input for the upcoming Request for Proposal of the Joint Development Project at the Wiehle Avenue Transit Station. The community meeting will be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at South Lakes High School (yellow cafeteria), 11400 South Lakes Drive, Reston. All interested parties are encouraged to attend and participate in this exciting opportunity.
The Wiehle Avenue Steering Committee was appointed by Supervisor Hudgins as a follow-up to the 2001 Charrette and has been meeting regularly to establish criteria for the RFP for the Wiehle Avenue Station. The proposed principles encourage diverse, mixed use, transit-oriented development, and seek to retain and expand access for pedestrian and non-motorized traffic. The Joint Development Plan RFP will provide an alternative to the current public plan for the Wiehle site, which is currently a parking structure for 2,300 parking spaces. For additional information on the meeting, contact the Hunter Mill District Office at 703-478-0283, TTY 703-736-4460.
