Certified Pool Operator Requirements
A certified pool operator must:
- Be 16 years of age or older.
- Have passed a certified pool operator exam within the last three years.
- Have a valid certified pool operator certificate.
- Demonstrate knowledge and be able to take the necessary actions to address aquatic health and safety issues.
Get a Pool Operator Certificate
You can get a pool operator certificate by passing an exam accepted by the Health Department. Formal training is not required to get a certificate, but is recommended.
Find Approved Course and Exam Providers
The Fairfax County Health Department maintains a list of approved pool operator course and exam providers. To be approved, pool operator course and exam providers must apply and certify that their course and/or exam adequately covers primary teaching elements outlined in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Model Aquatic Health Code, §6.1 Qualified Operator Training.
