Certified Pool Operator Requirements

While a water recreation facility is operating, at least one certified pool operator must be on the premises. A certified pool operator must:
  • Be 16 years of age or older.
  • Have passed a certified pool operator exam within the last three years.
  • Have a valid certified pool operator certificate.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and be able to take the necessary actions to address aquatic health and safety issues.

Get a Pool Operator Certificate

You can get a pool operator certificate by passing an exam accepted by the Health Department. Formal training is not required to get a certificate, but is recommended.

Approved Course and Exam Providers

The Fairfax County Health Department maintains a list of recognized pool operator course and exam providers pdf icon. To be recognized, pool operator course and exam providers must apply and certify that their course and/or exam adequately cover primary teaching elements as outlined in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Model Aquatic Health Code, §6.1 Qualified Operator Training.
