Swimming Pool Operator's Certificate
To obtain a Pool Operator’s Certificate in Fairfax County or in the cities of Falls Church and Fairfax, applicants must:
Complete an approved Certified Pool Operator Training
- Pass an approved standardized pool operators exam.
Pool Operator's Training Course
Applicants who are at least 16 years old may obtain a Pool Operator's Certificate by successfully completing an approved course of instruction administered or sanctioned by a nationally recognized swimming pool operators training organization.
Pool Operator's Exam
Applicants who are at least 16 years old may obtain a Pool Operator’s Certificate by unofficial training in swimming pool operation (not pre-approved by the Health Department) and successfully passing the approved standardized examination. Visit the Swimming Pool and Spa Association website for information about the exam, testing hours and locations.
- Attendance and successful completion of a pool operator's training course is not required before taking the exam. This procedure allows water recreation facility owners and management companies to directly train their employees in pool operations and individuals to demonstrate their knowledge of pool operations without a requirement to attend formal training.
- A pool operator training class is recommended for first time applicants, but not required. A number of local training providers offer pool operator training that may help you prepare for the exam.
Learn more about pool operator training on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Healthy Swimming and Recreational Water website.
