Event Recognizes Adult Day Services Week, September 12 - 16

Lincolnia Senior Center in Alexandria will be the site of a special dance celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Fairfax County Health Department's Adult Day Health Care program. More than 100 participants, families and staff are expected to join the festivities as National Adult Day Services Week, Sept. 12-16, comes to a close.

Fairfax County's Adult Day Health Care program meets a critical need and growing demand for community-based care for frail seniors and adults with disabilities. The program strives to promote participants' health and prevent premature institutionalization.

The Adult Day Health Care program began in Fairfax County 25 years ago with the opening of the Annandale center on Jan. 3, 1980. Since then, four additional centers have opened: Lewinsville in June 1985; Lincolnia in Jan. 1990; Mount Vernon in July 1990; and Herndon Harbor in June 2000. In 2006, the county is planning to open a sixth center at Little River Glen in Fairfax City.

Adult Day Health Care provides a protected and therapeutic environment in which participants receive health monitoring, nutritious meals, exercise, and social interaction. The program provides families a respite from caregiving during the day, and a cost-effective alternative to other long-term care options.

According to the Fairfax County Long Term Care Task Force Report of 2002, 10.4 percent of the county's population was 65 years or older, or an adult with a disability. It is estimated this percentage will increase to 16.8 percent by 2010.
