March 9, 2006

Thomas E. “Tom” Crow has been appointed director of the Division of Environmental Health for the Fairfax County Health Department.

In this position, Crow provides leadership to, and oversees the daily operations of, the Division of Environmental Health, which comprises the following programs: Air Quality, Community Health and Safety, Food Safety, Onsite Sewage and Water, and the Disease Carrying Insect Program.

Previously, Crow worked as a consultant to the Federal Food Safety Coalition, after retirement in 2001 from the United States Public Health Service (USPHS). He served as director of the Indian Health Service Division of Environmental Health Services, in Rockville, MD, from 1991 to 2001, and served additional duty as chief environmental health officer of the USPHS from 1998 to 2001.

Crow began his environmental health career with the USPHS in 1977 as a district sanitarian with the Indian Health Service in Minot, ND. He subsequently served in various field assignments for the next 14 years with the Indian Health Service in Keams Canyon, AZ; Phoenix, AZ; and Billings, MT.

The Environmental Health Officer Professional Advisory Committee of the USPHS recently honored him by establishing the annual Thomas E. Crow Mentor Award to recognize outstanding mentors in the USPHS.

Crow holds a bachelor of science degree, and a master of science degree in Environmental Health, from East Tennessee State University.

The Health Department’s Environmental Health director position was vacated by Dennis Hill, who retired last year.
