Event Recognizes National Adult Day Services Week, Sept. 17-23
Lincolnia Senior Center in Alexandria will host a “Viva Las Vegas” dance tomorrow celebrating the Fairfax County Health Department’s Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) program. More than 100 participants, families and staff are expected to join the festivities to recognize National Adult Day Services Week, Sept. 17-23.
This year marks the program’s expansion to six centers. The Braddock Glen Adult Day Health Care Center in Fairfax opened in May. Other centers are located in Annandale, Herndon, Lincolnia ( Alexandria), McLean and Mt. Vernon ( Alexandria).
Fairfax County’s Adult Day Health Care program meets a critical need and growing demand for community-based care for frail seniors and adults with disabilities. The program strives to promote participants’ health and prevent premature institutionalization. In a protected and therapeutic environment, participants receive health monitoring, nutritious meals, exercise, and social interaction. The program provides families a respite from caregiving during the day, and a cost-effective alternative to other long-term care options.
According to the Fairfax County Long Term Care Task Force Report of 2002, 10.4 percent of the county’s population was 65 years or older, or an adult with a disability. It is estimated this percentage will increase to 16.8 percent by 2010.
