Community Health Care Network Celebrates 20th Anniversary

May 24, 2010

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will join staff and community partners in recognizing the 20th anniversary of the Community Health Care Network (CHCN), the County's affordable health care program, on Tuesday, May 25. A reception for elected officials, community partners and program staff-past and present-will be held 8:15-10 a.m. in conference rooms 4 and 5 at the Fairfax County Government Center (12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax). The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to approve a Resolution in honor of the occasion during its regular meeting beginning at 9:30 a.m

Over the last twenty years, CHCN has grown and currently enrolls more than 20,000 Fairfax County residents annually. Three clinics provided more than 50,000 primary health care visits last fiscal year.

"The Community Health Care Network provides an important safety net in our healthcare system," said Gloria Addo-Ayensu, M.D., M.P.H., Fairfax County Director of Health. "We are proud of the excellent and affordable health care that is available to those who meet the eligibility criteria."

CHCN is a partnership of health professionals, physicians, hospitals, and local government administered by the Fairfax County Health Department. CHCN provides primary health care services to low income and uninsured residents of Fairfax County and the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church. The Health Department currently manages three locations in Falls Church, Reston, and Alexandria.

"Twenty years ago, recognizing serious unmet needs in our community, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors had the courage and foresight to create the Community Health Care Network," said Marlene Blum, Chairman, Health Care Advisory Board. "CHCN continues to provide essential health care to individuals and families without health insurance and without the resources to purchase it in the private market."

Fairfax County contracts with Molina Healthcare to operate the three CHCN sites. Molina Healthcare, Inc. is a multi-state managed care organization that arranges for the delivery of health care services to persons eligible for Medicaid, Medicare, and other government-sponsored programs.
