Health Care Advisory Board Celebrates 40th Anniversary

The Fairfax County Health Care Advisory Board (HCAB) will celebrate its 40th Anniversary during a special recognition at the Fairfax County Government Center on June 18 prior to the Board of Supervisors meeting. Immediately following the celebration, the Board of Supervisors will recognize the HCAB anniversary during its June 18 meeting.

The eleven-member citizen body was established by the Board of Supervisors on June 11, 1973 to assist board members in developing health policy for the county and to advise them on health and health-related issues that may impact people who live, work and play in Fairfax County.

"The Health Care Advisory Board has played a vital role in shaping health policy locally," said Marlene Blum, who has been chairman of the Health Care Advisory Board for the last 25 years. "It's been a privilege to be part of many important decisions that have protected and improved the health and safety of our community."

Among the many HCAB accomplishments over the last four decades are:

  • Playing an integral role in ultimately establishing smoke free workplaces and restaurants;
  • Establishing the HIV/AIDS Task Force that advocated for funding and services for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment and case management for affected residents;
  • Implementing an affordable primary health care program for low-income residents, which ultimately included the opening of three Community Health Care Network centers in the County;
  • Addressing the needs of the community's medically fragile and homeless populations by participating in the establishment of the Medical Respite and Homeless Healthcare Programs;
  • Promoting school health by identifying the need for defined school health policy guidelines, nurse-student ratios, and the development of a service delivery model to promote and protect student health;
  • Reviewing new or expanded medical care facilities in compliance with the Fairfax County Zoning Ordinance.

"The Health Care Advisory Board's contributions to the community over the last 40 years are hard to quantify-they're invaluable," said Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova. "We're all better off because the board's members are dedicated to studying health and the factors that impact health in our community."

The eleven HCAB members, with two at-large members, are appointed to represent the nine Fairfax County districts. The HCAB meets monthly. Learn more about the HCAB by visiting its website, www.fairfaxcounty.gov/hd/hcab.
