Birthday Party Facilitator;  Camp Counselor

Location: Frying Pan Farm Park, Fairfax County Park Authority

We are seeking highly motivated individuals who are enthusiastic about providing superior recreational, educational and environmental and cultural resource stewardship opportunities to enhance the quality of life for all.

Frying Pan Farm Park (Fairfax County Park Authority) is a popular Herndon park featuring Kidwell Farm, a 1920 – 1950s era working farm; indoor and outdoor equestrian facilities; visitor center with educational exhibit; and nature trails.  Thousands of visitors choose to spend their free time participating in a wealth of recreational options including classes, programs, camps, concerts and events.  Others simply come to walk the grounds and imagine what life would have been like when Fairfax County was a rural, agrarian community.  And for many children, it’s their first visit to a working farm.  Frying Pan Farm Park provides a much needed and welcome respite for Fairfax County residents.

Birthday Party Facilitator

Salary: $10/hour starting
Hours: Must be available for training in February.  Birthday parties will run most weekends from beginning of March to the end of November. Party facilitators are not expected to work every weekend, but will be expected to commit to dates in advance. Hours per weekend average 4 - 8 hours.

Help make positive childhood memories and gain valuable experience in the parks and recreation field by facilitating birthday parties at Frying Pan Farm Park! Under the direct supervision of the birthday party coordinator, party facilitators set up and clean up program spaces; fuel tractors; transport small farm animals; greet party guests; lead programs featuring farm animals; drive tractor with wagon on a farm tour. Party facilitators may be trained in carousel operation or assist with future party program development.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years of age.  Must be personable, punctual, dependable and capable of working alone. Must have proven strong oral communication skills. Must be a strong team player and demonstrate initiative to complete tasks. Interest in working with children outdoors.
Special Requirements: All successful applicants must also agree to a criminal background check including fingerprinting, attend mandatory training and possess current first aid and CPR certifications as well as a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications: Education, childhood development or interpretive program background.  Experience working with children in a group setting.  Strong interest in outdoor or environmental education and/or cultural resource stewardship. Experience working with small farm animals and/or driving a tractor.

Camp Counselor

Salary: $10/hour starting
Hours: Must be available for required trainings at West Springfield High School June 5-8 5-9 pm.  Other dates may be added in mid-June for camp planning or further site-specific training.  Camps run June 25 through August 24.
Must be available for duration of summer with the possible exception of those wishing specifically to work as counselors for Doggone Fun Camp (August 6 – 24) and All About Horses Summer Camp (July 30 - August 23).  However, applicants specifically interested in these two camps must still be available for all June trainings.Counselors also assist with the county’s 4H Fair held August 2 – 5 and are expected to be available to work that weekend.

Help make positive childhood memories and gain valuable experience in the parks and recreation and childhood development fields at Frying Pan Farm Park’s summer day camps.  Under the direct supervision of the program supervisor, camp counselors will provide high quality services and exceptional customer service to campers and parents through program delivery. Camp counselors will plan, implement and supervise activities for children aged 8 – 14 including field trips and pool time; procure, organize and maintain camp supplies; keep camp program areas tidy, safe and presentable; prepare and distribute activity calendars and supply lists; communicate camper assessments to parents and make phone calls as necessary; document accidents, injuries, complaints and problems and report through the proper chain of command; and provide overall supervision of children enrolled in the program in keeping with FCPA procedures and policies. Other job duties to support the program may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: All applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have experience working with children in a group setting.  Must have proven strong oral and written communication skills.  Must be a strong team player and demonstrate initiative to complete tasks. Should have interest in working with children outdoors.
Special Requirements: All successful applicants must agree to a criminal background check including fingerprinting, provide negative TB results, attend mandatory training, possess current first aid and CPR certifications and have never been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor related to abuse, neglect, exploitation or other barrier crimes as listed on the Sworn Disclosure Statement of the Criminal Record Check.
Preferred Qualifications: Education, childhood development or summer camp background. Strong interest in outdoor or environmental education and/or cultural resource stewardship. Experience working with horses and basic animal care.

Outdoor Skills Leader (Intern Position) – 3 positions

Compensation: $2400 for 12 weeks, late May to mid August or early June to late August

Note: Some evening and weekend work will be required.

Park Description: Tucked away in a remote river setting, Riverbend Park is Fairfax County Park Authority’s only staffed riverfront park and includes 418 acres of forest, meadows and ponds. Abundant wildlife and flora form the landscape here in the Potomac Gorge and this creates the perfect setting to teach outdoor skills and to share nature’s wonders with children. Riverbend offers diverse summer programming, including camps with a focus on primitive skills, fishing, nature, and science. Kayak tours, row boat programs and other family programs are offered during the summer. Through summer camps, staff’s goal is to share nature and outdoor skills with children while creating life-long stewardship values.

Position Description: The intern will gain a diverse experience working with all age groups and program offerings. The primary focus will be assisting and leading summer camps: fishing, primitive skills, nature and science camps. Initially the intern will assist with summer camps and then progress to leading and planning segments of camps. The intern will also assist with family programs, visitor center services and field studies.

Requirements: Must enjoy and have enthusiasm for working with children. Must be at least 18 years old by May 2012 and must have previous experience working with children. Knowledge of biology, astronomy, primitive skills or fishing is a plus. College students preferably with major in Environmental Education, Environmental Science, Parks and Recreation, or Biology, and ability to communicate effectively with adults and children.

Tai Chi Instructor

Aquatic Exercise and Aquatic Learn to Swim Instructors

$18.51/hour, depending on experience and qualifications (no benefits)

The Fairfax County Park Authority has immediate openings for Aquatic Exercise and Aquatic Learn to Swim Instructors at several Park Authority RECenters in Fairfax County. These positions are exempt (do not include county benefits), limited-term positions. The entry level salary is $18.51/hour depending on experience and qualifications. Certifications required are: Aquatic Learn to Swim - American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor; Aquatic Exercise – AEA, AAI, USWFA, YMCA or other nationally recognized certification. Instructor certification training for both areas is available through the Park Authority for interested candidates. Outdoor Fitness Instructors — Mountain Biking / Hiking / Trail Running

Mountain Biking—The mountain biking instructor leads introductory mountain biking classes on the trails and fire roads of Riverbend Park. The classes encourage participants to learn new skills, and enjoy fitness-building aerobic workouts, while enjoying the great outdoors. Trails include a variety of terrain along the river, through upland forests and meadows, and around ponds. Safety, form, technical skills, and appropriate clothing and equipment must be covered in class.
Hiking—The hiking instructor leads hiking for fitness and dynamic nature walking classes on the trails of Riverbend Park. The classes encourage patrons to enjoy fitness-building aerobic workouts while enjoying the great outdoors. Trails include a variety of terrain along the river, through upland forests and meadows, and around ponds. Safety, form, technical skills, and appropriate clothing and equipment must be covered in class.
Trail Running—The trail running instructor leads running classes on the trails and fire roads of Riverbend Park. The classes encourage participants to learn new skills, and enjoy fitness-building aerobic workouts, while enjoying the great outdoors. Trails include a variety of terrain along the river, through upland forests and meadows, and around ponds. Safety, form, technical skills, and appropriate clothing and equipment must be covered in class.  

Minimum Qualifications: Extensive outdoor fitness experience and familiarity with the skills, equipment, and safety components of the recreation activity being lead. Previous teaching experience.
Preferred Qualifications: First Aid and CPR certifications. Wilderness First Aid training and certification. Familiarity with local plants and animals.

Market Master / Volunteer Position

This is a volunteer position.
Hours:
One day a week during the market season, May through October.
Time Commitment: Prefer a one year commitment. Several pre-season meetings required.
Description: Duties for this position include: Each market day, arrive before market opening time to assist vendors to find their allotted space. Place Farmers Market signs in the appropriate street locations and also place “No Dog” signs at entrances to market. Mark attendance sheet. Check against vendors’ application sheet for dates they said they would be present. Announce “Opening of Market” punctually. Assist vendors and customers throughout market hours as needed. Close market punctually. Collect all signs. Make sure vendors clean up their spaces before they leave. If needed, forward any written complaints to Park Authority staff at Green Spring Gardens.
Qualifications: Ability to work with paid staff in the planning and organization of the market including vendor selection; to communicate effectively with a diverse population; able to work independently without on-site supervision; able to tactfully enforce all rules and regulations.
Training will be provided on-site by former market master or by the market coordinator. Paid staff always available to offer guidance by phone or through market visits.
