The Fairfax County Park Authority operates many facilities throughout Fairfax County. Below we have listed seasonal, part-time and some full-time job opportunities available at these facilities. Aquatic Exercise and Aquatic Learn to Swim Instructors

$18.51/hour, depending on experience and qualifications (no benefits)
Location: Various RECenters
The Fairfax County Park Authority has immediate openings for Aquatic Exercise and Aquatic Learn to Swim Instructors at several Park Authority RECenters in Fairfax County. These positions are exempt (do not include county benefits), limited-term positions. The entry level salary is $18.51/hour depending on experience and qualifications. Certifications required are: Aquatic Learn to Swim - American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor; Aquatic Exercise – AEA, AAI, USWFA, YMCA or other nationally recognized certification. Instructor certification training for both areas is available through the Park Authority for interested candidates. Knitting Instructor

$13.00 - $18.00/hour, no benefits
Location: Dranesville Tavern in Dranesville, Virginia
Hours: Tuesday evenings and/or Wednesday mornings beginning in September
In 1865, the Alexandria Gazette described Dranesville Tavern as "one of the finest roadside inns in the State of Virginia." That tradition of excellence and hospitality continues today at this beautifully restored National Historic Landmark. Dranesville Tavern is located at 11919 Leesburg Turnpike between Reston and Fairfax County Parkways.
Description: Teach introductory knitting classes including, material selection, cast on, knit, purl, combination stitch, and bind off.
Preferred Qualifications: Proven knitting skills, for example, portfolios, shows, or previous teaching experience. Ability to communicate effectively.

Quilting Instructor

Digital Photography Instructor

Description: Teach an introductory photography course, including f-stops, shutter speed, and composition. Build on the basics by teaching some advanced camera functions.
Preferred Qualifications: Proven photography skills, for example, portfolios, shows, classes taken, or professional qualifications. Previous experience teaching photography. Ability to communicate effectively.

Outdoor Fitness Instructors — Mountain Biking / Hiking / Trail Running

$15.00 - $19.00/hour

Hours: Classes are offered on weekends and evenings, and last one to two hours.

Mountain Biking—The mountain biking instructor leads introductory mountain biking classes on the trails and fire roads of Riverbend Park. The classes encourage participants to learn new skills, and enjoy fitness-building aerobic workouts, while enjoying the great outdoors. Trails include a variety of terrain along the river, through upland forests and meadows, and around ponds. Safety, form, technical skills, and appropriate clothing and equipment must be covered in class.
Hiking—The hiking instructor leads hiking for fitness and dynamic nature walking classes on the trails of Riverbend Park. The classes encourage patrons to enjoy fitness-building aerobic workouts while enjoying the great outdoors. Trails include a variety of terrain along the river, through upland forests and meadows, and around ponds. Safety, form, technical skills, and appropriate clothing and equipment must be covered in class.
Trail Running—The trail running instructor leads running classes on the trails and fire roads of Riverbend Park. The classes encourage participants to learn new skills, and enjoy fitness-building aerobic workouts, while enjoying the great outdoors. Trails include a variety of terrain along the river, through upland forests and meadows, and around ponds. Safety, form, technical skills, and appropriate clothing and equipment must be covered in class.  

Minimum Qualifications: Extensive outdoor fitness experience and familiarity with the skills, equipment, and safety components of the recreation activity being lead. Previous teaching experience. Preferred Qualifications: First Aid and CPR certifications. Wilderness First Aid training and certification. Familiarity with local plants and animals.

Market Master / Volunteer position

This is a volunteer position.
Hours:
One day a week during the market season, May through October.
Time Commitment: Prefer a one year commitment. Several pre-season meetings required.
Description: Duties for this position include: Each market day, arrive before market opening time to assist vendors to find their allotted space. Place Farmers Market signs in the appropriate street locations and also place “No Dog” signs at entrances to market. Mark attendance sheet. Check against vendors’ application sheet for dates they said they would be present. Announce “Opening of Market” punctually. Assist vendors and customers throughout market hours as needed. Close market punctually. Collect all signs. Make sure vendors clean up their spaces before they leave. If needed, forward any written complaints to Park Authority staff at Green Spring Gardens.
Qualifications: Ability to work with paid staff in the planning and organization of the market including vendor selection; to communicate effectively with a diverse population; able to work independently without on-site supervision; able to tactfully enforce all rules and regulations.
Training will be provided on-site by former market master or by the market coordinator. Paid staff always available to offer guidance by phone or through market visits.

Head Lifeguards

Location: South Run RECenter, Springfield, VA
Description: Ensures the health and safety of individuals in the pool and surrounding areas through observation and enforcement of park policies, pool rules, and local health department regulations. Consistently applies Fairfax County Authority (FCPA) and national Pool and Waterpark Lifeguard Training Program (NPWLTP) standard operating procedures. Schedules, organizes, directs and guides lifeguards in the performance of their duties. Initiates corrective measure when needed. Ensures application of safety standards and pool surveillance (10/20 Rule). Monitors pool activities and assists users groups with proper utilization of pool space. Resolves routine pool related issues and problems. Assists in the screening of lifeguard applicants. Assists in training and practice of staff’s rescue and preventive lifeguard skills through daily in-service training (skills/knowledge checks), and attendance at monthly staff meetings. Maintains certifications: Fairfax County Pool Operator’s license, lifeguard training (NPWLTP), first aid and CPR as well as annual FCPA safety training. Supervises and performs daily cleaning and maintenance duties relating to the pool and surrounding areas. Stocks and maintains all necessary supplies for pool and locker area.
Maintains proper pool and spa water chemistry. Monitors natatorium air temperature and humidity level. Notifies duty Manager of variations from established ranges. Administers first aid to public and staff as needed. Inspects, inventories, and stocks first aid supplies and safety equipment. Completes documentation as required by the safety office. Under the direction and supervision of the Aquatic Supervisor, assists in the operation and general maintenance of the pool and spa filtration systems and performs routine preventive maintenance to pool equipment.
Assists in supervising the participates in the annual draining and cleaning of the pool and surrounding area.

Qualifications:

    • Nationally recognized lifeguard training license or certification
    • First-Aid, Professional Rescuer CPR
    • Fairfax County Pool Operator’s Permit
    • Within 30 days required to obtain a National Pool & Waterpark Lifeguard Training Program’s – pool lifeguard license
    • Within 30 days required to obtain Head Lifeguard Training and Basic Leadership Training

Teach What You Love! Be a part-time instructor for the Fairfax County Park Authority. Positions are located in RECenters, public schools and other Fairfax County locations. Work part-time during evenings, days or weekends. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
$10.00 - $17.00/hour starting salary range
