EMT Instructor III

Salary: $24/hour
Location:  Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Academy

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department is looking for Commonwealth of Virginia certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Instructors to lead/co-lead Emergency Medical Technician-Basic courses for the new volunteers entering this renowned combination Fire and Rescue Department.

The Volunteer Training Program conducts three Emergency Medical Technician- Basic courses per year (July – October; November – February and March – May).  Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.) and on Sunday mornings (8:00 a.m. to 11:59 a.m.) with an occasional all day session. There are certain times throughout the year when a class is held on a Saturday rather than a Sunday.

An opportunity to assist with additional volunteer training courses:  American Health Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS), Introduction to Emergency Services [Level 1], Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC) or Fire Fighter Training will be available dependent on the candidate’s qualifications/certifications.

Adjunct Instructors are classified as exempt part-time employees for Fairfax County and there are no fringe benefits such as health insurance, retirement or leave.  Maximum weekly time accrual is limited to 20 hours per week for all exempt part-time positions the employee occupies within Fairfax County Government.  In addition, Fairfax County Government limits all exempt part-time employees to a maximum of 900 hours annually.

Minimum Qualifications:  VA EMT-B Instructor Certified.

Preferred Qualifications:  American Heart Association Basic Life Support Instructor Certified. 

Special Requirements:  Successful applicants will be required to complete a criminal background check.

Note: Fairfax County requires all prospective employees to have a social security card.  If you do not have a social security card and need to obtain one, visit your nearest Social Security office.

Firefighter/Medic: $53,887

Minimum Qualifications

  • Age 18 or older.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Drug-free for one year.
  • No driving suspensions; no more than one moving violation within past twelve months.
