Tot Camp Director

This announcement will be used to fill one position. 

Salary: $18.00 per hour
Schedule: Must be available to work 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. June 18, 2012 – August 10, 2012. 

The summer day camp will provide a comprehensive recreation program for Tot (3 & 4 years old) participants to include highly structured programs in the area of games, sport, arts & crafts, music & drama, and special activities and events.

The Tot Camp Director will be responsible for all phases of this operation from the planning stage to the evaluation stage and will directly supervise up to 5 Tot Counselors.  The Tot Director will report to the Camp Director on a regular basis.

Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education or experience equivalent to the graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a degree in recreation, physical education, teaching or related field.  Must be 21 years of age or older.Must be capable of strenuous activities such as running, standing, bending and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications: Life Guard Certification, CPR & First Aid certification, previous experience working directly with 3 & 4 year olds.

Special Requirements: Appointment to this position is contingent on the completion of a criminal background check (including fingerprinting), a TB test, and a check by Child Protective Services to the satisfaction of the hiring agency.

Description/duties:

• • Responsible for the organization, direction, planning and operation of the Tot Camp program.
  • Responsible for planning and developing recreational activities in the area of games, sports, arts, crafts, music, drama and science & nature.  This will be done prior to the beginning of Camp. 
  • Responsible for coordinating all activities within Tot Camp and turning in schedule of activities to director prior to the start of Camp.
  • Must follow standards set forth by the state of Virginia Department of Social Services with respect to Child Day Care in addition to those guidelines of the McLean Community Center.
  • Evaluates camp activities.
  • Maintains written records and program documentation for the Tot Camp program.
  • Responsible for the face-to-face leadership during the Tot Camp program and establishing the proper lines of communication with parents of the participant and Camp leadership.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Tot Counselor

 This announcement will be used to fill five positions. 

Salary: $13.00 per hour
Schedule: Must be available to work 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. June 18, 2012 – August 10, 2012.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be capable of strenuous activities such as running, standing, bending and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be at least 18 years old.

Preferred Qualifications: Life Guard Certification, skills in the area of recreations, and experience working with children in a Summer Camp setting. CPR and First Aid certification. Previous experience working directly with 3 and 4 year olds.

Description/duties: 

• • Responsible for supervision and welfare of assigned groups of  pre-schoolers (3-4 years old).
  • Must follow standards set forth by the state of Virginia Department of Social Services with respect to Child Day Care in addition to those guidelines of the McLean Community Center.
  • Responsible for directing and implementing recreation activities for participants as directed by the Tot Director.
  • Responsible for preparing equipment and supplies for each activity.
  • Responsible for daily clean up of various activities completed throughout the day.
  • Assists with completion of end of camp supply inventories.
  • Facilitates participant involvement in camp activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Camp Counselor

This announcement will be used to fill multiple positions. 

Salary: $13.00 per hour
Schedule: Must be available to work 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. June 18, 2012 – August 10, 2012.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be capable of strenuous activities such as running, standing, bending and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds.  Must be at least 18 years old.

Preferred Qualifications: Life Guard Certification, skills in the area of recreations, and experience working with children in a Summer Camp setting. CPR and First Aid certification.  Experience working directly with children ages 5 to 10.

Description/duties:

Activity Specialist

This announcement will be used to fill four positions, one from each of the following disciplines: Science & Nature, Arts & Crafts, Music & Drama, and Physical Recreation. 

Salary: $18.00 per hour
Schedule: Must be available to work 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. June 18, 2012 – August 10, 2012.

Minimum Qualifications:  Must be capable of strenuous activities such as running, standing, bending and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds.Documented experience teaching, directing, planning and implementing activities in the area of specialty.Must be 21 years of age or older.

Preferred Qualifications: Training certificates in area of specialty.  Life Guard Certification, skills in the area of recreations, and experience working with children in a Summer Camp setting. CPR and First Aid certification. Experience working directly with children ages 5 to 10.

Description/duties:

  • Responsible for planning, developing, and implementing highly structured activities in the area of specialty.  This will be done prior to the beginning of the Camp. 
  • Provides clear instructions so participants may be successful in completing hands-on activities.
  • Responsible for creating a program with a variety of activities.
  • Creates activities that are age appropriate (5 – 10 years old).
  • Responsible for the setting up of equipment each day for each group of Campers.
  • Responsible for clean-up of assigned area.
  • Responsible for completing end-of-Camp inventory.
  • Coordinates with other camp staff on field trips, swimming and special events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Assistant Director

Salary: $19.00 per hour

The assistant director will be responsible for all phases of this operation from the planning stage to the evaluation stage.  In addition, the assistant director will be responsible for general supervision of the camp in the absence of the Camp Director.  The assistant director will report to the Camp Director on a regular basis.

Minimum Qualifications:  Any combination of education or experience equivalent to the graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a degree in recreation, physical education, teaching or related field.  Must be 21 years of age or older.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience directing camp programs, CPR and First Aid certification, experience working directly with children age 3 to 10 years old.

Examples of duties include, but are not limited to, the following: 

1. 1. Planning, implementing, and evaluating daily camp activities. These program plans should include all areas mentioned above, should be documented, and then approved by the director.
   2. Responsible for all program publicity.  This may include preparation of all flyers, posters, letters, and conversations with parents.
   3. Supervision of staff both paid and volunteer. It is the responsibility of the assistant director to assign tasks, monitor performance, evaluate performance, provide necessary training, and elicit program ideas from staff.  The Assistant Director should deal with staff issues as they occur and always report to the Camp Director as soon as possible.
   4. Responsible for day-to-day leadership during the camp program, general supervision, and for establishing proper lines of communication with parents.
   5. Responsible for the weekly monitoring of all program funds spent. Spending shall not exceed the amount of funds available.
   6. Daily inspection of equipment and facilities for hazardous conditions. This includes all outdoor play equipment, and general program equipment.  If there are visible hazards, the assistant director should immediately notify the Camp Director as well as the rest of the Camp Staff.
   7. Responsible for completing all paperwork in a timely fashion.
   8. Responsible for requesting all program supplies and equipment, in addition to the care and clean up of these supplies and equipment on a daily basis.
   9. Maintaining an open line of communication with the Camp Director concerning the program, staff, participants, etc.
   10. Perfoms other duties as assigned.

Teen Trip Director

Salary: $19.00 per hour

Responsible for implementing, executing, leading and evaluating daily trip activities for participants age 11 to 14. 

Minimum Qualifications:   Any combination of education or experience equivalent to the graduation from a four year college or university with a degree.  Must be able to drive 12 passenger van (no CDL needed.)  Driving record must be less than 6 demerits.  Must be capable of strenuous activities such as running, standing, bending and carrying items weighing up to 50lbs.  Must be 21 years of age or older.

Preferred Qualifications:  Any combination of education or experience equivalent to the graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a degree in recreation, physical education, teaching or related field.  Prior experience leading teens and youth on trips.  CPR First Aid certification.  Ability to think and react quickly to changing needs of participants and the program.

Examples of duties include, but are not limited to, the following: 

1. 1. Responsible for getting Teens to and from daily trips, using county credit card to pay for various activities.
   2. Responsible for all participant information including contact info, emergency contacts, allergies and health concerns, and diet, etc. 
   3. Using effective time management and group management skills in keeping group on time and together for all appointments and trip-related deadlines; participant headcounts.
   4. Using strong off-site independent judgment and making sound decisions keeping in mind the best interests and well-being of the participants, staff and program. 
   5. Supervision of staff, both paid and volunteer. It is the responsibility of the Trip Director to assign tasks, monitor performance, evaluate performance, and elicit program ideas from staff. The Trip Director should deal with staff issues as they occur and always inform the Camp Director as soon as possible.
   6. Responsible for daily leadership during the Trip program, for general supervision of staff and participants, preparing all materials and equipment for daily trips.
   7. Responsible for the weekly monitoring of all program funds spent. Spending shall not exceed the amount of funds available.
   8. Responsible for incident reporting, maintaining head counts, carrying participant info, time management/awareness, group management, creaking back up plans and using strong off-site judgment. 
   9. Maintaining an open line of communication with the Camp Director concerning the program, staff, participants, etc.
   10. Performs other duties as assigned.

 Old Firehouse Teen Center Activity Facilitator (Recreation Leader II) (Part-time)

Salary: $12.00/hour, no benefits
Hours: 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; additional evening and weekend hours may be necessary

This announcement will be used to fill current and future activity faciiltator positions at the Old Firehouse Teen Center. Work involves assisting program coordinators with the planning of activities for middle and high school students, directly leading programs, facilitating involvement of teens in planned activities, and ensuring the safety of participants and the security of the facilities.The primary goal is to provide opportunities for teens to engage in positive leisure activities and improve personal ethics through the provision of a variety of recreation activities, leisure education sessions, character education, community service and at-risk behavior prevention and education. Performs other duties as needed.

Minimum qualifications: Education and experience equivalent to high school graduation or G.E.D., plus some experience working with the teen population. Must be at least 21 years of age.

Preferred qualifications: Capable of driving a 12-passenger van. Experience working with youth and experience facilitating recreational and educational programs with the teen population in facilities or community settings.

Special requirements: CPR and First Aid certification.The appointees to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.
