Recycle paper, cans and bottles.   Save water Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth in the morning and at bedtime. This saves up to 8 gallons of water per day, or 240 gallons a month.   Transportation Walk, bike, take public transportation and carpool.  Every gallon of gasoline saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out to the atmosphere.   Electricity A. Turn off lights, computers and other equipment at night and set to sleep mode when not in use.   B.Select renewable sources of electricity such as wind, solar and biomass that produce little or no global warming pollution from your provider.   Energy AuditContract for an energy audit or conduct a simple audit online.   Replace Light Bulbs Switch to energy-efficient compact fluorescents (CFL).  They last 10 times longer than an incandescent   Home Maintenance Test windows and doors and replace weather stripping if needed.   Wrap your hot water heater in an insulating blanket to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.   Heating/Air Conditioning Set your thermostat 2 degrees higher in the summer and lower in the winter. Use fans in the summer.   Home Economics Use small appliances, such as microwave, instead of oven. Cover pots/pans when cooking to keep heat in and use the appropriate size burner.   Landscaping A. Plant native leafy trees around your house to provide windbreaks and summer shade.     B.For sustainable landscaping: use less water, fertilizer, pesticides and reduce mowing.   C.Install rain barrel(s) and compost landscape waste and kitchen waste.   "Cool ideas" at my school or faith-based organization:   I currently do ...   I pledge to do ... Team Green Produce an environmental vision statement of environmental beliefs and intents. Establish a Green Team or Eco-Committee to determine environmental recommendations. Reflect on, celebrate, and publicize environmental progress.   Partner Up Join with community organizations in partnering on environmental projects and events.   Paper Sense Purchase paper made of at least 30% recycled content. Implement a double-sided copying policy.   Transportation Walk, bike, take public transportation and carpool. Encourage no idling of cars.   Cut Down on Chemicals Use paint with no or low volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Team Up Put together a group of stakeholders interested in coordinating actions that will reduce global warming emissions.   Paper Sense Print 2-sided on photocopiers and set “print duplex” as default on computers. Re-use paper printed on one side - make notepads with the blank side or use as scrap paper.   Buy Green Implement an Environmental Preferential Purchasing Policy - Purchase biodegradable products such as cleaning agents (many are petroleum based), paper products, etc.  Purchase EPA minimum 30% post-consumer recycled content office paper.   Less Mail Eliminate mailing list duplicates coming in or being sent out. Stop your junk mail and unsolicited faxes by replying to the sender.   Telecommute Telecommute or choose a different option to get to work, e.g., bike, bus, walk, carpool.
