Description: The mountain biking instructor
leads introductory mountain biking classes on the trails and
fire roads of Riverbend Park. The classes encourage participants
to learn new skills, and enjoy fitness-building aerobic workouts,
while enjoying the great outdoors. Trails include a variety
of terrain along the river, through upland forests and meadows,
and around ponds. Safety, form, technical skills, and appropriate
clothing and equipment must be covered in class.
Minimum Qualifications: Extensive outdoor
fitness experience and familiarity with the skills, equipment,
and safety components of the recreation activity being lead.
Previous teaching experience.
Preferred Qualifications: First Aid and CPR
certifications. Wilderness First Aid training and certification.

Operations Assistant |

Description: Assist with the marina rental
program at Riverbend Park, on the Potomac River. Provide row
boat, kayak, and fishing supply rentals to park visitors. Inspect,
maintain, and secure boats, equipment, and the boat house. Move
boats and equipment for patrons and storage. Use the patrol
boat for safety checks and to assist patrons. Perform sales
and cash handling, including sale of snacks and fishing supplies.
Provide information, and answer inquiries from the public.
Minimum Qualifications: Minimum age 18. Driver’s
license. Ability to work well with others and independently.
Ability to lift and carry row boats, kayaks, and boating equipment
over diverse terrain. Strong swimming ability.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience
with row boats, kayaks, and power boats. Multilingual. First
Aid and CPR certifications. Strong swimming ability. Previous
sales and costumer service experience. Freshwater fishing experience.

Lifeguard
Trainer |

Location: Lake Fairfax Park, Watermine Family
Swimmin’ Hole
Hours: Varied work shifts will include early
morning, evening, weekend and holiday hours.
Description: Lake Fairfax Park is seeking a
motivated individual to assist the aquatic management staff
to provide a clean, safe, and pleasurable recreation experience
for over 100,000 guests that enter the gates every summer season.
This individual will manage and teach original and recertification
lifeguard courses. Individual will be responsible for the planning
and execution of the park’s in-service program. Will conduct
lifeguard vigilance awareness tests, aquatic safety audits,
and provide supervisory training for head lifeguards. Twenty
percent of job duties will consist of assisting with supervision
of lifeguard and head lifeguards during assigned shifts. During
lifeguard shortages, will be required to fill vacant shifts.
Minimum Qualifications: Must possess an International
Pool and Waterpark Lifeguard Training Program Instructor license.
Must obtain a Northern Virginia Pool Operator’s certificate
or AFO upon hiring.
Preferred Qualifications: High school diploma,
supervisory and teaching experience.

Naturalist |
Location:

Hours: Two positions available. The first
position is 40 hours/week and requires two weekend days per
month and some evening work. The second position is part time
and will work one to three days during the week plus two Saturdays
or Sundays a month. Both positions begin March 1, 2008.
Description: Plans and presents interpretive
programs in natural and cultural history for pre-school and
elementary age children, families, and birthday parties.
Preferred Qualifications: Any combination
of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s
degree in natural or life sciences, biology, natural history,
or a closely related field or six months experience presenting
interpretive programs. Ability to communicate effectively, both
orally and in writing. Ability to deal effectively with citizen
inquires and questions.

Park Description: Tucked away in a remote
river setting, Riverbend Park is Fairfax County Park Authority’s
only staffed riverfront park and includes 418 acres of forest,
meadows, and ponds. Abundant wildlife and flora form the landscape
here in the Potomac Gorge and this creates the perfect setting
to teach outdoor skills and to share nature’s wonders
with children. Riverbend offers diverse summer programming,
including camps with a focus on primitive skills, fishing, adventure
sports, and nature. Kayak tours, row boat programs and other
family programs are offered during the summer. Through summer
camps, staff’s goal is to share nature and outdoor skills
with children while creating life-long stewardship values.
Position Description: The intern will gain
a diverse experience working with all age groups and program
offerings. The primary focus will be assisting and leading summer
camps: fishing, primitive skills, adventure sports, and nature-based
camps. Initially the intern will assist with summer camps and
then progress to leading and planning segments of camps. The
intern will also assist with family programs, visitor center
services and field studies.
Requirements: Must enjoy and have enthusiasm
for working with children. Fishing experience a plus. College
students preferably with major in environmental education, environmental
science, parks and recreation, or biology, and ability to communicate
effectively with adults and children.
Note: Some evening and weekend work will be
required.

Market
Master (at a Fairfax Co. Farmers Market Location) |
This
is a volunteer position.
Hours: One day a week during the market season,
May through October.
Time Commitment: Prefer a one year commitment.
Several pre-season meetings required.
Description: Duties for this position include:
Each market day, arrive before market opening time to assist
vendors to find their allotted space. Place Farmers Market signs
in the appropriate street locations and also place “No
Dog” signs at entrances to market. Mark attendance sheet.
Check against vendors’ application sheet for dates they
said they would be present. Announce “Opening of Market”
punctually. Assist vendors and customers throughout market hours
as needed. Close market punctually. Collect all signs. Make
sure vendors clean up their spaces before they leave. If needed,
forward any written complaints to Park Authority staff at Green
Spring Gardens.
Qualifications: Ability to work with paid
staff in the planning and organization of the market including
vendor selection; to communicate effectively with a diverse
population; able to work independently without on-site supervision;
able to tactfully enforce all rules and regulations.
Training will be provided on-site by former market master or
by the market coordinator. Paid staff always available to offer
guidance by phone or through market visits.

Duties: Supervises weekend and occasional weekday
evening rentals at historic sites throughout Fairfax County.
