Springfield Mall and Wegmans
We’ve all been waiting for the expected renovations of Springfield Mall and frankly, I expected to see bulldozers on the site by now. I’m pretty unhappy about the delays, especially in light of all that the County and I have done to expedite the Mall’s plans, review, and permit process for the Mall owner.
I haven’t seen any signals that Vornado is backing away from the project but I’m now at the ‘show me’ point. I will continue to push the owners to move on the Mall revitalization and remain confident that work will begin soon. The bottom line is that the ball is in the private sector’s court here—there’s nothing more that the County can do.
Regarding Wegmans, as with Springfield Mall we’re waiting for the private sector right now. The County has expedited its review and permit processes and is ready for Wegmans (at the corner of Beulah Street and Telegraph Road) to proceed as soon as litigation with adjacent property owners is resolved.
