Jamie MacVicar, the author of
The Advance Man: A Journey Into the World of the Circus was
interviewed for BookCast by Fairfax County Public Library Director
Sam Clay. BookCast is sponsored by Dominion Resources through the Fairfax
Library Foundation.
The Advance Man is the story of the author’s life as a regional marketing director (or advance man) with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus back in the 1970s. He weaves the history of circus promotion with his personal journey in this well-researched memoir that took 17 years to write.
Among the jobs of a circus advance man: learning “how to promote a lion tamer or reassure an irate city mayor that someone was going to clean up the five miles of elephant dumpings leading to city hall.”
MacVicar is the president of MacVicar Enterprises, Inc., a communications firm. He has published several articles and short stories and is the coauthor of Crossed Pens, a humorous exchange of letters among three men.
