John F. Sullivan was interviewed for BookCast by Fairfax County Public Library Director Sam Clay. BookCast is sponsored by Virginia Commerce Bank through the Fairfax Library Foundation.

  • John F. Sullivan was a polygraph examiner with the CIA's polygraph division for more than 31 years. He is the author of the recent Gatekeeper: Memoirs of a CIA Polygraph Examiner.

  • During his tenure, he conducted more lie detector tests than anyone in the history of the CIA's program. According to Sullivan, lie detectors act as the agency's gatekeepers, preventing foreign agents, unsuitable applicants and employees guilty of misconduct from penetrating or harming the agency.

  • From 1971-1975, he worked in Vietnam, the subject of his first book, Of Spies and Lies: A CIA Lie Detector Remembers Vietnam.
