The mission of Access Services is to remove barriers to
library services for those with disabilities. The Access
Services library makes books, programs, and assistive
equipment available throughout the county.
Access Services administers the Talking
Book Program of the Library of Congress, which provides
and delivers special cassette players and recorded books
free of charge to qualified individuals. If you have
vision impairment, are unable to hold a book, or have
a reading disability, you may qualify for the Talking
Book Program. Contact Access Services at 703-324-8380
or e-mail
for qualification requirements and an application.
The meeting rooms of several branches are equipped
with built-in listening systems, and some branches have
personal listening systems that you may borrow to use
during library events or for personal use. Ask about
these services at your branch’s Information Desk.
The Access Services library has a variety of assistive
technology available for demonstrations and use. Please
contact us for more information or an appointment. Each
of the library’s 21 branches has an adapted computer
workstation equipped with ZoomText® software that
can magnify text up to 16 times. Branches also offer
closed-circuit television magnifying systems that allow
people with low vision to perform everyday tasks such
as balancing bank statements or reading newspapers.
Access Services maintains rotating collections of current
books at senior residences, hospitals, nursing homes,
and other facilities. Individuals who cannot get to
their local library because of a permanent or temporary
disability may qualify for our Home Delivery service.
Access Services works with library branches, Fairfax
County agencies and other non-profit organizations to
offer programs that help individuals manage their disabilities.
We also periodically host an assistive technology fair
to highlight adaptive devices for people with disabilities.
The Access Services library also sponsors support
groups for adults coping with the loss of sight.
Groups meet monthly at various locations in the county.
Contact Access Services for a schedule of programs and
meetings.
A quarterly newsletter, Loud and Clear, is available
in several formats: on audiotape, in large print, in
braille, in Spanish, and by e-mail. Contact Access Services
for a free subscription, or read Loud
and Clear online.
