Located 200 yards west
of the swimming pool at Martin Luther King Jr. Park,
815 Fordson Rd., Alexandria, Va.
This cemetery was originally
the burial ground of the WILLIAM PEAKE Family. Peake
settled on Little Hunting Creek prior to 1732 and the
family resided here until bankruptcy caused Dr. HUMPHREY
PEAKE to lose the farm in 1829. The property was divided
and sold, mainly to freed slaves of the Peake, Mason,
and Washington families. The last Peake burial was in
1805, but the black residents of the area continued
to use the cemetery into the 20th century. The cemetery
contains nine gravestones and an undetermined number
of unmarked graves. Several large trees dominate the
area and a metal fence of recent construction surrounds
the cemetery. The cemetery is clean and well maintained.
