OLD COLORED GRAVEYARD

11401 Lee Highway, Fairfax, Va.

A WPA report submitted by Alfred Carter of Fairfax, Va. described this graveyard as "one of the beauty spots of the neighborhood." Carter claimed that in 1844 HARRIETT LAMB and her son GEORGE were "living near this spot" in 1845. He recounts that ANNE MILLS, Lamb's sister died in 1845 and that one acre was set aside as a colored burial ground. No documentation has been found to corroborate this claim but the following is verifiable: 1) Harriet Lamb purchased the land in 1844 (Db I3:427). 2) Harriett Lamb's will conveyed the land to her son GEORGE in 1904 (Wb 12:339). 3) George sold the land to Mr. CORBIN 0'BANION on Jan. 4, 1904 (Db P6:299). 4) GEORGE LAMB (1832-1926) was later buried in Jermantown Cemetery (FX015). Since no mention of a cemetery appeared in any of the above referenced documents this leads to the speculation that Carter was actually referring to nearby Jermantown Cemetery, however, Lamb never owned that parcel so it seems unlikley. NOTE: The original 12 1/2 acre parcel also encompassed lots 056-2-04-02-1 thru 20.
