WILLIAM D.
TROUT enlisted as a private in Co. C, 28th Va. Infantry
("Old Dominion Rifles") on May 10, 1861
at age 20. He listed his home as New Castle, Va.
and his occupation as farmer. He died from illness
on Oct. 23, 1861 at his regiment's winter quarters
at Camp Withers, Centreville, Va. His gravestone
is a piece of native siltstone with a handcut inscription.
The stone was removed from the gravesite and given
to the owner of nearby Level Green Farm several
years ago, where it remained until it was returned
to the original developer in April of 1990. The
developer, at the request of the homeowners association,
donated the gravestone to the Centreville Regional
Library for safekeeping in April of 1994, where
it is to be placed on public display. The gravesite
sits between two rows of townhouses and is devoid
of any markers or plantings except for a single
clump of daffodils. The gravesite is clean and well
maintained.
