The Friends of the Oakton Library was founded in 2001 in response to community enthusiasm for creation of the new branch. Planning and design of the building started in 2002. The groundbreaking ceremony was held April 8, 2006 and the library opened on September 29, 2007. The main activity of the Friends is to facilitate community involvement and to support the library's ongoing programs.
