In January 1956, Springfield's
only library service was an outdated bookmobile that served
the rural community. It is no coincidence that January
1956 is also the date the Friends of the Richard
Byrd Library was founded. This group raised $6,400
to cover rent, utilities and maintenance for a period
of one year, as well as shelving, chairs, bamboo curtains
and a librarian's desk. By December 1957, just a year
and a half after the Friends united, Springfield was ready
to assume its financial obligations for the library branch.
A lease was signed for space on Backlick Road. The present
building was dedicated in 1965. The Friends of the Richard
Byrd Library continue to be active in the Springfield
community after 48 years.
