Since 1998, the Grants Office has been raising resources
to enrich the programs, services, and collections of
FCPL through grants. This year’s objectives are
based in filling special unmet needs with focus on:
-
Literacy. Enhancing literacy programs
and resources with continuing and expanding
the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities' Motheread®/Fatheread® family literacy outreach
program; contributing to the Reach Out and
Read emergent literacy program at the Inova
Pediatric Center; extending the Summer Reading
Program at Richard Byrd branch in Springfield
to children who would otherwise be left out
of this exciting program because of impassible
streets. A grant-funded summer intern will
take “Check Out Springfield!” to
these children, and another will continue
last year’s successful “West
Side Stories” to children on the west
side of Route 1, where there is no library
branch.
-
Technology literacy. Through collaborations
with Fairfax County Community and Recreation
Services and the Office for Partnerships,
the Library supports technology literacy
with a focus on youth, and fostering
their success in school, innovativeness,
and career
skill building.
-
Health and medical information
and choices: Through partnership
with the Inova
Health Care System, Inc., the library
hosts health information classes, maintains
an
enlarged medical reference collection,
and carries out an intensive community
outreach program.
-
Cultural programs. The
very popular and diverse author,
literature, story
events, and history programs are supported
by grants
and continue to be a focus for this year.
-
Professional training programs.
The Grants Office continually seeks
funds
and opportunities for staff training
and development.
