Comic Books.

Comic books are attracting a growing audience across a wide demographic spectrum in our society. They appeal to some purely as recreational reading, to some as marketable collectibles, and to others as a source of information for research into popular culture. They also serve to interpret and document social, historical and cultural events, and to express societal values. Some of the best known comic book publishers include: Dark Horse Comics, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and Alternative Comics.

The comic book is a direct offshoot of the newspaper comic strip. The first American newspaper comic strip was the 1895 “Yellow Kid.” In 1933 Eastern Color Press decided to use their printing press down time to print an eight page comic section consisting of reprinted newspaper comic strips, which was folded into a 9 by 12 inch booklet. The first comic book with new content was New Fun Comics published by National Periodicals in February 1935.

Although graphic novels are not considered comic books, they are books written in the comic format.  This book format has become very popular in recent years.
