A scrapbook is an album of diverse photos, family documents, special papers or clippings, and other kinds of mementos with special meaning for the scrapbook maker. Scrapbook subjects include genealogy, vacations, pets and kids.
As a means of preserving cherished moments for future generations, scrapbooking has grown tremendously in the past several years, in part because of the rise of digital scrapbooking. It is a $2.9 billion industry and is the third most popular craft among American households. An estimated 30 percent of households participate in what was a traditionally a hand-on craft consisting of gluing photographs, items and personal notes into a decorated scrapbook to make pages of memories.
Scrapbooking as a hobby has recently evolved into a mix of traditional and digital techniques. Many scrapbooking retailers have combined the friendly, social aspect of scrapbooking with the speed and convenience of the digital. These retailers combine the traditional store, classes plus a state-of-the-art photo printing center with computer stations where customers can edit and print their digital photos.
National Scrapbooking Day was begun in 1994 and is celebrated on the first Saturday in May
