A scrapbook is an album of diverse photos, family documents,
special papers or clippings, and other kinds of mementos
with special meaning for the scrapbook maker. Scrapbook
subjects include vacations, pets and kids.
As a means of preserving cherished moments for future
generations, scrapbooking has grown tremendously in the
past several years, in part because of the rise in digital
scrapbooking. It is a $3.3 billion industry and has even
surpassed golf in popularity among American households.
An estimated 25% of households participate in what was
a traditionally a hand-on craft consisting of gluing photographs,
items and personal notes into a decorated scrapbook to
make pages of memories.
Scrapbooking as a hobby has recently evolved into a mix
of traditional and digital techniques. A hybrid scrapbooking
retailer has emerged which preserves the friendly, social
aspect of scrapbooking while leveraging the speed and
convenience of the digital. These retail facilities combine
the traditional store plus a coffee/tea and pastry café
with a state-of-the-art photo printing center with computer
stations where customers can edit and print their digital
photos.
National Scrapbooking Day is on the first Saturday in
May as pronounced by the National Scrapbooking Association
a few years ago.
