Christmas

*

Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and is observed on December 25th each year. The term Christmas probably came into use about the 16th century and comes from the Old English Christes Maesse, or "Christ's Mass." Christmas is observed throughout the world by Christians but is also celebrated by many non-Christians as a secular or cultural holiday. Christmas celebrations may include a variety of customs with either secular, religious, or national aspects which vary from country to country. Many of the traditions associated with the holiday have origins in ancient pagan winter celebrations.

The Christmas tree might come from the pagan idea that the evergreen tree represents a celebration of the renewal of life. The use of the Christmas tree is a tradition that is thought to have originated in Germany. Other traditions associated with this joyous holiday include the exchange of gifts, Santa Claus, the sending of cards to family and friends, colorful decorations, and the singing of Christmas carols. Many people take part in special religious services.
