Diwali, the Hindu feast of lights, commemorates, among other
things, the deity Rama's defeat of the demon Ravana, who
desired to destroy the world. The festival, celebrated October
- November, is a time of New Year observance for those Hindus
who follow the Vikram era — a system of dating comparable
to the Christian calendar. Offerings are made to Lakshmi
(Laksmi), goddess of wealth, for prosperity in the coming
year.
