The first Earth Day was proclaimed by San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto on March 21, 1970 (the March equinox). This date is now celebrated as International Earth Day. Earth Day is a day dedicated to clean air, water and land preservation, as well as the long term protection of the planet. Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin called for an environmental teach-in, or Earth Day to be held on April 22, 1970. The Environmental Protection Agency and other U.S. government agencies continue to celebrate Earth Day on April 22.
Earth Day is now observed in 175 countries and this nonprofit observation is coordinated by the Earth Day Network.
