In 2007, Virginia and America celebrate the 400th anniversary of the founding of the first permanent English settlement in the New World. This special anniversary is planned to capture the spirit and diversity of Americans. It will showcase Virginia's unique role as the birthplace of modern America.
A replica of the Godspeed, one of the original ships that brought settlers to the New World, visited six major ports on the eastern seaboard, including Alexandria, Virginia; Baltimore, Maryland; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; New York, New York; Boston, Massachusetts; and Newport, Rhode Island beginning in May 2006.
Many commemorative events, live performances, historical exhibits, cultural displays and programs are planned. In addition there will be commemorative stamps, coins and other memorabilia available. The celebration will conclude in the fall of 2007.
