Kwanzaa is a seven day non-religious African American celebration of family, community and faith, celebrated from December 26 to January 1. It was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966 to introduce and reinforce seven basic values of African culture which contribute to building and reinforcing family, community and culture among African American people. These seven values called Nguzo Saba in Swahili are: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
