Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May in the United States.
Mother’s Day was first observed in the USA on May 13, 1907. Anna Jarvis asked her church in Philadelphia to hold a service in memorial to all mothers on the anniversary of her mother’s death. Two years later, in 1909, Anna and her friends began writing letters to Congress to establish an annual national holiday. In 1914, Congress passed legislation establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
Mother’s Day has various origins in history, the earliest being celebrations in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. A number of countries celebrate Mother’s Day, though on different dates of the year. In England, for example, it is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent, and is called “Mothering Sunday.”
The holiday is celebrated in the United States with greeting cards, flowers and gifts.
