The celebration of the new year is the oldest of all holidays. Originally the new year was celebrated in the beginning of spring. In the Gregorian calendar, New Year's Day is the first day of the year. It first came to be fixed at January 1 by the Roman senate in 153 BC.
Many cultures believe that what they did or ate on the first day of the year could bring them either good or bad luck for the rest of the year. Some traditional New Year foods thought to bring luck are something in the shape of a ring, black-eyed peas, pork, cabbage or rice.
The modern tradition of making resolutions dates back to the early Babylonians.
Today, celebrations include parades, football games, and fireworks. Since the 1900s the night of December 31, New Year's Eve, has become an occasion for celebration.
