Presidents’ Day is an official American government holiday commemorating the birthday of George Washington. Presidents’ Day is a U.S. Federal Government holiday which occurs on the third Monday in February.
The official holiday was moved from Washington's actual birthday, February 22, to the third Monday in February when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act (Public Law 90-363) informally called the Monday Holiday Law, which gives Federal government workers a holiday on that day. The Act was signed on June 28, 1968 by President Richard Nixon, and took effect on January 1, 1971.
In George Washington's home state of Virginia the holiday is known as "George Washington Day."
The House debate on the Monday Holiday Bill is recorded in the Congressional Record, May 6 (pp. 11827–11830), 7 (pp. 12077–12079), and 9 (pp. 12583–12611), 1968.
