St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland who is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland in the fifth century. St. Patrick's Day is a Christian feast day celebrated in the Catholic Church, the Church of Ireland and some other denominations on March 17th, the day of his death. It has been observed as a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.
St. Patrick's Day has also been celebrated since 1903 as a secular holiday and is now celebrated worldwide by Irish people and increasingly by many of non-Irish descent. The secular version of the holiday includes wearing green, eating and drinking Irish fare and attending parades. The parade in Dublin is part of a five day festival. The largest parade outside of Ireland is held in New York City.
