The Tony Awards are the most distinguished awards presented to the actors, writers, directors, and designers of American Theater productions. Established in honor of Antoinette Perry, they have been presented annually since 1947. Antoinette Perry, former chair of the American Theatre Wing, was a legendary actress, director, and producer of the American theatre.
Tonys are awarded to selected Broadway musicals, straight plays, and revivals. Lifetime Achievement Awards are awarded, on occasion, to those who have supported the theater in ways that do not fall under established Tony Award categories. A panel of approximately 700 judges representing the entertainment industry and the press participate in the selection process.
