The
Republic of Cameroon, in western Africa,
is bordered by Nigeria to
the northwest; Chad to
the northeast; the Central
African Republic to the southeast;
Republic
of the Congo, Equatorial
Guinea, and Gabon to
the south; and the Atlantic
Ocean to the southwest. The total area of the country
is 184,000 square miles (475,000 square kilometers) which
is about the size of California. Cameroon's capital
is Yaounde.
The official languages
are French (spoken by 80 percent) and English (20 percent)
but about 279 African languages and dialects are spoken
among various ethnic groups.
Three major religions are Christianity, Islam and indigenous
beliefs.
The estimated population is 18,060,382 in 2007.
The unit of currency is CFA (Communaute Financiere Africaine)
franc.
