The Republic of Cape Verde is the archipelago of 15 islands lying in the Atlantic
Ocean approximately 320 miles (520 km) off the coast of West Africa. Its total land area is 1,557 square miles (4,033 square kilometers). Formerly a territory of Portugal, the Republic of Cape Verde gained its independence in 1975.
The capital of Cape Verde is the port city of Praia, which is located on São Tiago (Santiago) Island, the largest island. The second largest island is Santo Antao. Six of the islands are not inhabited.
It is populated mostly by people of mixed Portuguese and African descent (Creole) and the estimated population is 420,979 in 2006. People in Cape Verde are called as Cape Verdeans.
Portuguese is the official language. But a variety of Creole dialects are also spoken. Most Cape Verdeans (also known as Caboverdeans) are Roman Catholics.
The unit of currency is Cape Verdean escudo (CVE).
