The Republic of Chad is bounded on the north by Libya,
on the east by Sudan, on the south by the Central
African Republic, on the southwest by Cameroon,
and on the west by Nigeria and
Niger.
The total area of Chad is 495,752 square miles (1,283,998
square kilometers) and the capital is N'djamena. A former
colony of France, Chad gained its independence in 1960.
The estimated population was 9,944,201 in 2006. The people of Chad belong to a number of ethnic groups and the major groups include Arabs, Toubou in the north, and the Sara, the Massa, and the Moudang in the south. The major religious groups are Muslim in north and Christian and animist in most non-Muslim south.
French and Arabic are the official languages.
The Republic of Chad has a republic form of government. The head of state is the president. The head of government is the prime minister.
The unit of currency is CFA (Communaute Financiere Africaine) franc.
