Comoros is an archipelago of four islands and a few small islets between Madagascar and the eastern coast of Africa. Three of the islands make up the Union of the Comoros, which is independent. The fourth island is a dependency of France.
The islands are volcanic in geologic origin, and cover an area of 863 square miles in total.
The islands are mountainous, the highest peak being Mt. Karthala, an active volcano with an elevation of 7,746 feet (2,361 meters). The climate is tropical.

The Comoros has been influenced in turn by Arabs (8th century), European explorers (16th century) and the French (19th century).
The capital of the Union is Moroni.
