Africa with Guinea in red.Flag of Guinea.Guinea, a country located in Western Africa, is bordered by several countries, with its base resting on the Atlantic Ocean. Once a part of a series of empires, Guinea’s history dates back to 900 A.D. It gained independence in 1958. Slightly smaller than Oregon, the country is divided into seven administrative regions. Conakry is the capital city.

Guinea’s abundance of natural resources provides the potential for large economic growth. The nation is rich in minerals with large amounts of bauxite, iron ore, gold, and diamond deposits. However, Guinea’s internal structure and political unrest places the nation at a disadvantage. As a result, Guineans are among the poorest in West Africa. The Guinean franc is the monetary unit of Guinea.

Guinea has a republic government, headed by a Prime Minister and President.

Guinea’s population of over 9.9 million consists of 24 ethnic groups – the Fulani, Mandinka, and Soussou groups make up the majority. The majority of Guineans speak Fulani. A small percentage of the population speaks French, the official language. About 85 percent of the population practices the Muslim religion. Christianity and other religions are followed by the remaining population.

The four branches of the military – the Guinean Army, Air Force, Navy and Gendarmerie – are responsible for a number of safety measures, such as securing Guinean territories and providing internal security.

Guinea has a hot, tropical climate.

Football is the country’s most widely engaged sport. Swimming and hiking are also enjoyed in various regions.
