
Madagascar is an island
off the east coast of southern Africa – east
of Mozambique.
The country is slightly less than twice the size of Arizona.
Madagascar has a republic form of government. The president is elected by popular vote for a five year term and is eligible for a second term. The capital, Antananarivo, is located in the center of the country. The currency in Madagascar is the ariary.
The July 2007 estimate of the population was 19,448,815 with a population growth rate of three percent. The current life expectancy is 62.14 years with women outliving men by almost four years.
French and Malagasy are the official languages. Madagascar has a 68.9 percent literacy rate of people over the age of 15 with 13 percent more men being literate than women. The majority of the populations (52 percent) follow indigenous religious beliefs; 41 percent are Christians and seven percent are Muslim.
