Malawi
is a long, narrow, land-locked country located in south
central Africa. It is bordered on the north and northeast
by Tanzania; the east through the southwest by Mozambique,
and the west and northwest by Zambia. The country is slightly
smaller than Pennsylvania. Malawi has a multiparty democracy
form of government. The president is elected to a five
year term with eligibility for a second term by popular
vote. Lilongwe, the capital, is located slightly southwest
of the center of the country. The currency is the Malawian
kwacha.
The July 2007 estimate of the population was 13,603,181 with a population growth rate of 2.4 percent. The current life expectancy is 42.98 years with women and men having about the same life expectancy. Malawi has a high HIV/AIDS occurrence among the adult population (14.2 percent) and a relatively high infant mortality rate (9.2 percent).
Chichewa is the official language of the country, but only 57.2 percent of the populace speak it. Other languages spoken are Chinyanja, Chiyao, Chitumbuka, and multiple others. Malawi has a 62.7 percent literacy rate of people over the age of 15 with over 26 percent more men being literate than women. Christianity is the majority religion with almost 80 percent of the population following some form of the religion. Over 12 percent of the population are Muslim.
Malawi is one of the least developed countries in the world.
