Mali is a land-locked country located in the north
and west portion of Africa.
It is bordered by Algeria, Niger,
Burkina
Faso, Cote
D’Ivoire, Guinea,
Senegal and Mauritania.
It is slightly less than twice the size of Texas. The
country has a republic form of government. The president
is elected to a five-year term by popular vote and
is eligible for a second term. The capital is Bamako
and is located in the southwestern part of the country
on the Niger River. The Mali currency is the Communaute
Financiere Africaine franc.
The July 2007 estimate of the population was 11,995,402 with a population growth rate of 2.7 percent. The current life expectancy is 49.5 years with women outliving men by almost four years. Mali has a high infant mortality rate of 10.6 percent.
French is the official language of the country with Bambara being spoken by 80 percent of the population; numerous other African languages are also spoken. Mai has a 46.4 percent literacy rate of people over the age of 15 with over 13 percent more men being literate than women. Islam is the majority religion with 90 percent of the population adherents.
Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world with 65 percent of its land either semi-desert or desert.
