
Senegal is located in the westernmost part of Africa. It is bordered on the north by Mauritania; on the south by Guinea-Bissau and Guinea; and on the east by Mali. Its total area is 75,955 square miles (196,722 square kilometers) which is about the size of South Dakota.
Senegal is a republic with a strong presidency. Its capital is Dakar.
The population was estimated at 11.9 million in 2006.
More than 90 percent of the population are Muslims and most of the remainder are Christians. Some groups in southern Senegal practice traditional religions.
The major languages are French and Wolof. The official language is French.
The unit of currency is CFA (Communaute Financiere Africaine) franc.
