
Located in North Africa, Tunisia is a country that borders the Mediterranean Sea, and sits between Algeria and Libya. It is a bit smaller than Missouri, and its capital is Tunis.
There are over 10.2 million Tunisians, mostly of Arab-Berber descent. Islam is practiced by 98 percent of the population. Christian and Jewish faiths make up the rest of the population.
Tunisia operates under a republic government set forth by a constitution most recently amended in 2002. A President heads the state and a Prime Minister heads the government. The country's ruling party, the Democratic Constitutional Rally, has strong control over its political climate.
Arabic is the official language, and French is taught and used in business.
The unit of currency is the dinar, which can only be obtained in Tunisia, and cannot be exported or used beyond Tunisia.
Unlike other foods of Northern Africa, Tunisian cuisine is characteristically spicy hot. The national dish of Tunisia is couscous.
