The Republic of Indonesia is an archipelago of more than 18,000 islands, situated between the Pacific and Indian oceans. Indonesia is the largest country of Southeast Asia in both area and population. It ranks fourth among the nations of the world in population after China, India, and the United States. The total area of all islands is 735,269 square miles (1,904,347 square kilometers) which is about three times the size of Texas. Jakarta is the capital and located on Java which has been the most important island.
The population was estimated at 231.8 million in 2006 and 90 percent of all Indonesians follow the religion of Islam, making Indonesia the world's most populous Muslim nation.
The Javanese and the Sundanese are the largest ethnic groups who live on the island of Java, making up nearly 60 percent of Indonesia's population.
The official language is Bahasa Indonesia.
Indonesia declared independence in 1945. The head of state and government is a president elected by direct popular vote.
Its monetary unit is Rupiah (IDR)
