Kuwait is located on the Persian Gulf and is surrounded by Iraq to the north and west and Saudi Arabia to the south and west. Kuwait is slightly smaller than New Jersey. The capital is also named Kuwait and is located in the Kuwait Bay slightly north of the center of the coastline. The country is a constitutional emirate (a nation ruled by an emir). The Amir of Kuwait is a hereditary position. The country's currency is the Kuwaiti dinar.
The July 2007 estimate of the population was 2,505,559 of which an estimated 1,291,354 are non-nationals. Kuwait has a population growth rate of 3.56 percent which is slightly misleading since it includes returning expatriates who left during the Gulf crisis.

Kuwait has an 93.3 percent literacy rate of people over the age of 15 with almost three and a half percent more men being literate than women. The majority religion (85 percent) is Muslim made up of 70 percent Sunni and 30 percent Shi'a.
